Welcom to F-style

Welcome to F-style Ski School

Skiing expands your world.
Skiing connects you to our beautiful nature and our wonderful earth.
That is why we teach how to ski, and how to ski better.

Thank you very much for having found this website for ski lessons in English. We hope we will see you in near future.

We have been teaching Freestyle skiing in Hakuba Goryu ski resort for the last 30 years. We have taught not only Freestyle Skiing, but also we have taught Technical Skiing, Powder Skiing, Back Country Skiing, jumps, and Bump skiing.

Hakuba Goryu combines 3 different ski resorts, Goryu, Iimori, and 47 and you can ski there with just one lift ticket.
Since we have been often asked to teach our technique in English, we finally decided to teach our skiing method in English. Our method is based on the official Japanese Ski Association method, which can be applied to beginners, intermediate skiers, and to Olympic competitors, of whom we have produced many.

2024-2025 ski season, we handle only private lessons. We are hoping to have a variety of group lessons in the future.

We cannot wait to meet you and teach you how to ski or to improve your skills. Please do not hesitate to contact us anytime with your questions.

You can check all the English speaking instructors schedule from the Schedule Button above.

The Director

Hello from Masahito Tsunokai

Director of F-style Ski School

Thank you very much for reading this page.

First, I must tell you that I truly love skiing.

The sport of skiing has been very special to me, and I feel like it is my mission to ski. Skiing has given me not only the daily happiness, but it has changed my life, and it has changed the way I see the world.

I would like to spread the joy and the happiness of skiing. I really feel that it is my lifetime mission. Please join our ski lessons with no worries.

I was born in Japan, Gunma prefecture in 1955. When I was younger, I was a swimmer and competed in many swimming races. I started Freestyle skiing when I was attending Aoyama Gakuin university where I studied English literature.

From the late 1970s to middle of 1980s, I aquired most of the Freestyle ski titles in Japan, as well as some international competitions.

I earned the Japanese National Combined Championships 7 times and 35 individual national titles. Numerous times, I held top ten standings in World Cups and World Championships.

I retired from Freestyle competition in 1986 and became the Japanese National Team coach. Later, I started my own ski school in 1994 in Hakuba.

In 2000, I decided to come out of retirement and re-enter the world of competitions. A year later I attained second place in the 2001 National Freestyle Ski Championship. During this period, I also re-started many Big Air shows, Acro ski shows, and Mogul demonstrations.

Although sport has dominated most of my life, I also have a great love for writing and for classical music and began to publish articles and books in the late 1990s.
I was awarded the Ushio Literary Prize in 1998 for a nonfiction story, "The falling stars of the Nagano Olympics”. In addition to nonfiction stories, I have written a few fiction books, ski books, swimming books, and a few classical music books as well.

Meeting people from all over the world brings me so much joy and I really believe that we can make this world a better place through our
skiing.

Recommendation from Pirapat

Pirapat "I've been a lifelong student of F-Style Ski School. I took my first lesson with Masahito Tsunokai 12 years ago. Now, as a certified ski instructor, I've skied in many countries and experienced various ski schools.

In my experience, F-Style stands out as one of the best in Japan, especially for English-speaking students.

Their focus on freestyle skiing, particularly competition moguls, is unique. The range of techniques they teach, from carving to jumps, are impressive. Every time I take a lesson with F-Style, my skills noticeably improve."

Instructorsself-introduction

Greetings from Takako Ishii

Licensed Ski Instructor of Ski Association of Japan

TakakoI’ve been teaching skiing in Hakuba for 10 years to many guests from all over the world.
I started skiing when I was 2 or 3 years old. I was born in Osaka, but I started going to Hakuba since I was a high school student. Since then, I have been fascinated by Hakuba.

I've competed in many technical skiing competitions in Japan, and now I'm obsessed with back country skiing in powder snow.

I learned English from a British teacher at a catholic school and I lived in the United States for 2 years. Of course, I didn't forget to ski in the US!
After I came back from the US, I started working in an English conversation school in Tokyo.
I have long time experience teaching children English, so I am good at interacting with children.

I often hike up the ridges around Hakuba to find exciting skiing on my time off and enjoy hiking with snowshoes on the snow field.

In the summertime, I guide people to the Japanese Alps as a licensed mountain guide of Nagano.

It is my great pleasure to teach not only the people in Japan, but also the people from all over the world about the charms of Hakuba throughout the season.
I'm looking forward to seeing you in Hakuba!

Instructorsself-introduction

Greetings from Naomi Yumoto

Licensed Ski Instructor of Ski Association of Japan

Hello, everybody!
I’m Naomi Yumoto. I'm from Osaka, Japan, I was born and raised there. I have lived in Nagano prefecture for almost 30 years, enjoying skiing and teaching English.
I've been teaching English to wide age group from 3-year-old children to their 60's, 70's and 80's for more than 26 years. It's really fun to meet new prople.
My first ski experience was when I was 13 years old. Skiing has been my favorite sport since then. I even moved to Hakuba to ski! I taught skiing for a couple of years right after moving here.
I love English, skiing and traveling as well. I have visited Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand, Nepal, India and Canada and lived in Seattle in the US, where I studied English, for a year.
Steve Jobs, a cofounder of Apple, once said in his famous speech, "You can connect two dots somehow in your life when looking back." I think that the two dots for me are skiing and English.
I'm so thrilled to start working as one of the ski instructors of F-style this coming winter season. It would be wonderful if I could help you make your stay in Hakuba more enjoyable by teaching skiing in English. I can't wait to see you!

Recommendation from Sermsin

Sermsin
"Having skied across the globe in Switzerland, France, Austria, Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, I can confidently say that the expert instruction I received in Hakuba was unparalleled. The combination of world-class powder snow, breathtaking scenery, and the highly skilled instructors at F-style make Hakuba a truly exceptional skiing destination. Experience the difference for yourself and book your lesson today."

Recommendation from Lewis

"If you're seeking an outstanding skiing school, Mr. Tsunokai's F-style Ski School is undoubtedly your best choice.
My wife and I are skiing enthusiasts from Taiwan. We attended a two-day private skiing coaching lesson and joined a two-day skiing camp during the 23/24 season. I must say, it was a remarkable skiing experience. We both gained invaluable insights and techniques that significantly improved our skiing abilities.

First and foremost, the instructors at F-style are top-notch. Led by the legendary Masahito Tsunokai (角皆優人) himself, their team is not only highly skilled but also incredibly passionate about skiing.

Secondly, their skiing camp was also superb. We were impressed by their organization and activity arrangements. From preparation to actual skiing, every aspect was well-planned, allowing participants to fully immerse themselves in the joy of skiing. Moreover, attending the camp provided opportunities to meet other skiing enthusiasts, exchange expertise, and enrich the overall experience.

Lastly, we must highlight their dedication to safety. Whether during private coaching lessons or the ski camp, they prioritize the safety of participants. Coaches ensured everyone could enjoy skiing in a secure environment.

Overall, Masahito's F-style Ski School left a lasting impression on us.
We have already booked our private coaching lessons for the 24/25 skiing season. If you're looking to elevate your skiing skills and have an unforgettable winter adventure, I highly recommend enrolling in their private coaching lessons and camps. You won't be disappointed!
